How to Take the First Step in Industrial IoT Transformation
IoT transformation in a production facility begins not with buying sensors but with deciding which problem will be measured. We look at how to choose the right first step.

Most industrial IoT projects slow down not because of a technical obstacle but because of the wrong starting point. A project that aims to make an entire facility visible at once gets stuck in scope discussions before it produces its first data point.
A healthier start addresses not the whole facility but a single question about it: which line consumes more energy than expected, which equipment accounts for most unplanned downtime, at which point measurement already happens but is never recorded.
Choosing the question to measure
A good first question carries three properties together: it describes a problem the operations team already recognises, it can be measured with the infrastructure at hand, and its answer can change a decision. The third is the most frequently skipped — data that changes no behaviour once measured is technically correct but operationally silent.
- Describe the problem in the operations team's language, not in sensor terms.
- Check which data your existing infrastructure already produces; in most facilities measurement exists and recording does not.
- Limit the first scope to a single line, a single building or a single equipment family.
- Decide from the outset who will look at the data, and to make which decision.
The communication layer comes later
The technology choice is not the first step. Once the measurement point, the sampling interval and the site's physical conditions are established, the communication layer largely selects itself. Ethernet on a wired line, LoRaWAN across a wide and dispersed site, DECT NR+ on a campus that requires operator independence are different answers — and the right one changes with the project.
Connecting a site is easy; the hard part is deciding in advance which data will change a decision.
When the first step is chosen well, the second stops being a matter of debate. One working measurement chain becomes both a technical template and an internal reference for the rest of the facility.
