What Are the Differences Between LoRaWAN and NB-IoT?
Both are low-power wide-area technologies, yet they diverge fundamentally in ownership, coverage and operating model. We frame the comparison on the right axis.

LoRaWAN and NB-IoT are often presented as alternatives to each other. Technically both are designed to carry small amounts of data over a wide area at low power consumption — but what determines which is right for a project is usually the operating model rather than the radio characteristics.
Who owns the infrastructure?
With LoRaWAN the organisation operates the gateway, and therefore the infrastructure, itself. That allows coverage to be shaped around its own needs and to run independently of a carrier; in exchange, deploying and maintaining the network is the organisation's responsibility.
With NB-IoT, communication runs over the existing mobile network. Infrastructure investment and maintenance sit with the operator, and the organisation works on a subscription model. Coverage is bounded by the operator's network and lies outside the organisation's direct control.
On which axis should the comparison be made?
- If the entire site sits within one campus or facility, running your own infrastructure usually gives more control.
- If devices are geographically dispersed across individual points, using the existing network removes the deployment burden.
- Long-term operating cost is more decisive than initial investment; the two models pull in opposite directions on that line.
In practice many projects use both: in-facility measurement over the organisation's own network, and dispersed points beyond the site over the carrier network. That is not a compromise but each point being solved according to its own conditions.
