Edge and cloud are often presented as two competing architectures. In practice they are different links in the same chain, and the question is not which to choose but where each operation belongs.
What should stay in the field
If a measurement must become a response within seconds, that decision belongs in the field. So do functions that cannot be allowed to stop the moment connectivity drops: local control, threshold checking and the first filtering of raw data are the edge layer's work.
What belongs at the center
Comparison across sites, long-term trend analysis, reporting and an organisation-wide consistent view are formed at the center. Patterns a single site cannot see within itself only emerge once data is brought together.
The edge provides the speed of a decision; the center provides its context.
In a well-built architecture this division of labour is invisible to the operations team. The user works with a single interface, and which computation happens in the field and which at the center remains an implementation detail.
